About Dr Whitefield

Dr Sara Whitefield is a specialist of Oral Medicine.

Dr Sara Whitefield is a senior specialist of Oral Medicine. She is a graduate of the prestigious Medical and Dental School of Guy’s Hospital, London where she received her BDS and of the School of Dental Medicine of Tel Aviv University where she completed her residency in oral medicine.

As part of her expertise, Dr Whitefield diagnoses and treats oral diseases, including chronic, viral and auto-immune conditions. She has vast experience of performing biopsies and removal of lesions from the mouth cavity, treatment of jaw pain and discomfort and ongoing management of oncology patients to alleviate the associated side effects in the mouth as a result of cancer treatment.

Dr Whitefield is a senior consultant in the department of Oral Medicine, which is part of the Ear, Nose and Throat division of the Ichilov Hospital at the Sourasky Medical Center, Tel Aviv. Within her responsibilities, she runs a joint clinic with the hospital’s department of Dermatology to diagnose and treat auto-immune diseases such as lichen planus, pemphigus and pemphigoid.

Dr Whitefield receives patients for consultations at her clinics in Tel Aviv and Ra’anana. She is fluent in English and Hebrew and accepts referrals from other dental and medical professionals.

With over 20 years of experience, Dr Whitefield has published numerous academic papers in leading journals on the subject of oral medicine (Please see here) and regularly lectures at professional conferences in Israel, the US and Europe. Dr Whitefield is a member of the Israeli Association of Oral Medicine and involved with professional bodies overseas, including the American Academy of Oral Medicine, European Association of Oral Medicine and the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC). Similarly, she was appointed as an international participant in the World Workshop of Oral Medicine focusing on the future treatments for lichen planus.

What is Oral Medicine?

Oral medicine is a medical speciality within the field of dentistry. Oral medicine is considered as the ‘internal medicine’ of the mouth, combining the worlds of medicine and dentistry. The field of oral medicine covers infectious and auto-immune diseases of the mouth, intra-oral lesions, conditions of the salivary gland, jaw discomfort and management of side-effects presenting in the head and neck as a consequence of oncology treatment.

Dr. Sara Whitefield has been my dentist for a little over a year, but she has had a significant impact on my life. Not only is she a dentist, but she specializes in oral medicine.
